I suffer from Acne, is there anything I can eat to help reduce it?

A. Although acne is considered to be a hormonal condition, there are other factors such as the diet that act as strong influences for skin health since certain foods may affect the production of hormones and worsen acne. Having said this, eliminating certain foods from the diet and increasing the amount of specific vitamins and minerals may help reduce and prevent acne breakouts. However, we still highly recommend consulting with a dermatologist in order to better assess your situation.

The following diet tips have been proposed to help prevent acne breakouts:

  • Daily consumption of fiber as it helps keep the colon clean and may remove toxins from the body before they reach the skin (Examples: Whole Grains such as Nestlé FITNESS® Cereal, Fresh fruits and vegetable). Foods that are high in fiber tend to take longer to digest and keep blood sugar from rising too quickly; hence, reduce the amount of insulin hormone.
  • Eat a low fat diet as high fat consumption may elevate hormone levels in the body that cause blemishes on the skin.
  • Avoid fried foods as they were found to increase break outs.
  • Limit salt intake and avoid high salted snacks such as chips, lunch meats, canned foods, and salted popcorn.
  • Avoid highly processed carbohydrates such as sodas, candy, and desserts. High levels of sugar in food raise the level of insulin in the blood; consequently, raising the levels of acne–causing hormones in the body.
  • Substitute coffee with Nescafé® DECAF (3-4 cups per day).
  • Don’t skip meals, start your day with a good breakfast containing protein and complex carbohydrate such as whole wheat bread or FITNESS® cereal.
  • Commit to 2-3 sessions of exercise a week
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
