I suffer from constipation! What should I eat?

A. Constipation is one of the most irritating conditions associated with the digestive system! Every one experiences it at some point in life mainly due to a poor diet or a change in routine such as travelling or ageing. How to prevent it?

  • Eat more fibre which helps food moves smoothly in your digestive tract. Fiber is found in many vegetables, fruits, whole grains (whole-wheat bread and burghul), oats, and legumes such as lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas. But make sure you add fibre to your diet a little at a time, to prevent bloating.
  • Drink plenty of water and fluids since fibre needs to absorb water to help it pass through your system. Without enough water, you’ll still be constipated!
  • Get enough exercise: Just 20-30 minutes of walking helps your digestive system stay active and healthy. More advice: Don’t ignore the urge to use the toilet and don’t risk taking any laxatives without checking with your doctor first!
